Week 1 in Seattle: intensive seminar

This week we’re convening in the CHID Lounge on the UW campus in Seattle to talk about our summer readings, brainstorm projects, go over logistics and tips for surviving in New York, and to try out some of the research methods we’ve read about.

Students on our program will be exploring New York City while drawing any of a number of participatory observational methods that we’ve covered in class, including phenomenology, mental mapping, psychogeography and ethnography. We experimented with these tactics on the UW campus and in the University District neighborhood, using online tools and in-person meetings to discuss the advantages and drawbacks of each approach.

We also delved into the history of the campus and its architecture in order to better understand how our perceptions of the environment intersect with the plans and aims of the space’s designers.
