Janee Johnson’s project looked at the history and present of Manhattan’s Fashion District. Formerly known as the Garment District, this area has been home to a vibrant and still globally relevant fashion and garment industry for decades. Recently, the city voted to officially change its name from ‘Garment’ to ‘Fashion’ District in order to signal New York’s competitiveness in the global fashion scene, but some contend that this name elides the working class history of the neighborhood.
